Can I Add a Battery and Keep Queensland's 44c Solar Feed-in Tariff?
Possibly, but the system has to be designed and operated within the Solar Bonus Scheme rules. Do not assume that an ordinary solar battery installation will preserve your 44c tariff. Check with your electricity distributor before adding a battery or changing your solar equipment.
The 44 cents per kilowatt-hour feed-in tariff is closed to new customers. Eligible customers who keep meeting its conditions can receive it until 1 July 2028. Losing it early could change the financial case for a battery substantially.
The key battery rule
The Queensland Government says customers may use alternative energy sources, including batteries, only when the system receiving the 44c tariff is not operating, such as at night or during a blackout, unless the alternative source has a separate connection to the network.
The same guidance says to check with the electricity distributor before adding batteries. It also lists changes that can end eligibility, including increasing inverter capacity and using an alternative energy source while the 44c system is operating without a separate connection.
That makes the electrical design and operating controls important. Ask an accredited battery installer to explain the proposal in writing, and ask the distributor to confirm how it affects your tariff before work begins.
Check the money as well as the wiring
With a 44c feed-in tariff, exporting solar may already produce a valuable bill credit. If a battery means exporting less, you give up some of that credit in exchange for using stored energy later. The value of the electricity you avoid buying, the lost export credit and battery losses all belong in the calculation.
A salesperson's standard battery payback estimate may not account for your legacy tariff. Ask for a comparison showing your current bill position, the proposed battery setup and what happens if you lose 44c eligibility. Read our battery payback guide for the basic calculation.
Before accepting a quote
Confirm that your latest bill actually shows the 44c Solar Bonus Scheme tariff.
Tell the installer you want to preserve your eligibility.
Get the battery operating arrangement and any inverter changes in writing.
Check the proposal with your electricity distributor before installation.
Ask for a financial estimate that accounts for lost solar export credits.
Battery Match QLD can help you gather the right information before an installer assesses the property. Tell us you are on the 44c tariff when you enquire. We can prepare a Battery Fit Check and, where possible, introduce you to one suitable installer for a formal assessment and quote. Our service is free for homeowners and there is no obligation to proceed. Start your Battery Match.
Battery Match QLD cannot confirm Solar Bonus Scheme eligibility or approve an electrical design. Obtain confirmation from your electricity distributor and a suitably licensed installer.
