Is a Home Battery Worth It in Queensland?

It depends on what happens at your home

A home battery can help you use more of your own solar electricity. But that alone does not tell you whether buying one is worthwhile.

The useful question is: what would this particular system do for your household, and does that justify its full cost?

Start with your electricity use, solar generation and the reasons you are considering a battery.

Do you have surplus solar to store?

If your panels regularly produce more electricity than your home uses during the day, a battery may let you keep some of that energy for later.

If you already use most of your solar generation as it happens, there may be less surplus available to charge a battery.

Ask the installer to use your actual energy information when assessing this.

When do you buy electricity?

Evening and overnight usage matter when assessing a solar-charged battery.

A household that buys substantial electricity after sunset may use stored solar differently from one that uses most of its energy during the day.

A bill is a useful starting point. More detailed usage data, where available, can give a clearer picture.

What do you pay for electricity and receive for exports?

Storing solar means giving up the feed-in payment you would otherwise receive for exporting that energy.

The potential saving depends partly on the difference between that payment and the cost of electricity you avoid buying later. Charging and discharging losses also matter.

Ask for savings estimates based on your electricity plan and realistic battery use.

Look at the full installed cost

Request a written price that includes the equipment and installation work your property needs.

Ask the installer to identify any incentive included in the quote, confirm your eligibility and explain the amount you would actually pay.

If you are financing the purchase, include interest and fees when considering the total cost.

Treat a payback estimate as an estimate

Ask how the installer calculated the projected savings.

What electricity prices did they use? How much energy do they expect the battery to supply each year? Have they allowed for losses and declining battery capacity?

A battery may not recover its purchase cost within its useful life. A clear explanation of the assumptions is more useful than a confident promise.

Is backup power part of the value for you?

Some households value keeping selected appliances running during an outage, even where bill savings alone are less compelling.

Backup capability must be specifically included in the system design. Ask what will be supported, for how long under expected usage, and what limitations apply.

Receiving Queensland’s 44-cent feed-in tariff?

Get specific advice before changing your system.

The Solar Bonus Scheme has eligibility conditions affecting batteries and system changes. Ask your electricity distributor to confirm how the proposed arrangement could affect your entitlement before agreeing to the work.

Sometimes the answer is to wait

A battery may be less attractive if you have little surplus solar, low electricity use after sunset or a high installation cost.

You might also find that moving suitable appliances into daylight hours helps you use more solar without buying storage.

The aim is to understand the options before spending money.

Start with your own household

Battery Match QLD’s free Home Battery Fit Check helps gather the information needed to begin the conversation.

Tell us about your property, existing solar and what you want to achieve. With your consent, we can introduce you to a suitable installer in our partner network, subject to availability.

Our Fit Check is an initial information-gathering service. It does not calculate guaranteed savings or replace an installer’s assessment.

The service is free for homeowners. Participating installers pay us referral fees, and you remain free to seek other quotes or decide against installing
