Queensland Home Battery Rebates and Discounts 2026

Understand Queensland home battery discounts in 2026, eligibility considerations and questions to ask before accepting an installation quote.

Queensland homeowners may be able to reduce the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

The program is available nationally, including throughout Queensland. It generally provides a discount of around 30% on eligible battery installations, although the actual amount can vary.

Battery Match QLD helps homeowners understand their options and connect with a suitable local installer for a clear battery, solar or solar-and-battery quote.

Is there a Queensland home battery rebate in 2026?

The main battery incentive currently available to Queensland homeowners is the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Although people often call it a rebate, it usually works as an upfront discount. The discount is created through small-scale technology certificates, known as STCs, under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

In most cases, an eligible installer or retailer includes the value of these certificates in the customer’s quote, reducing the amount paid for the system.

You generally do not need to submit a separate application to the Australian Government if the discount is being handled by the installer.

How much is the home battery discount?

The Australian Government describes the support as a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of an eligible battery installation.

However, this does not mean every household will receive exactly 30%.

The actual value can depend on:

  • The usable capacity of the battery

  • The number of STCs created by the installation

  • The date the battery is installed

  • The way support is calculated for different battery sizes

  • The value assigned to the STCs

  • Whether every program requirement is met

The level of support is scheduled to reduce over time. Your installer should clearly show the discount included in the quote and explain how it has been calculated.

Which batteries may qualify?

To qualify under the program, a battery system generally needs to:

  • Be new and permanently installed

  • Have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh

  • Be connected to a new or existing eligible solar PV system

  • Be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery list

  • Meet the applicable Australian standards and electrical safety requirements

  • Be installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia accredited installer with the appropriate battery endorsement

  • Meet the program’s technical requirements

The program supports battery systems up to 100 kWh in nominal capacity. However, STCs are only available for the first 50 kWh of eligible usable capacity.

Not every battery product, property or installation will qualify. Eligibility should be confirmed before you sign an installation contract.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes. An eligible battery can potentially be added to an existing solar system.

The existing solar, inverter, switchboard and electrical setup will need to be checked first. Some older systems may require changes before a compatible battery can be installed safely.

Replacing the entire solar system may not always be necessary. A suitable installer should inspect or properly assess what you already have before recommending an upgrade.

Helpful information to provide includes:

  • A recent electricity bill

  • The size and age of your solar system

  • Your inverter brand and model

  • When your household uses the most electricity

  • Whether backup power is important to you

  • Any plans to purchase an electric vehicle or add major appliances

You can upload a recent power bill through Battery Match, but this is optional.

Do I need to apply for the discount myself?

Usually, no.

Most customers receive the benefit through their accredited installer or battery retailer. The installer or retailer may offer either an upfront reduction or, in some cases, a rebate after installation.

Before accepting a quote, ask:

  • Is the government battery discount included?

  • What is the discount worth on this particular quote?

  • Is the battery eligible under the current program?

  • Who will create and claim the STCs?

  • What happens if the installation is found to be ineligible?

  • Is the quoted price before or after the discount?

Make sure the discount and final price are clearly recorded in writing.

A warning for customers receiving the 44-cent feed-in tariff

If you still receive Queensland’s older 44-cent Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff, speak with your electricity distributor and installer before adding a battery or changing your solar system.

Certain changes can cause customers to lose eligibility for the 44-cent tariff. This can include a battery being configured to supply electricity while the qualifying solar system is operating or being able to export stored electricity to the grid.

Don’t approve an upgrade until you understand how it could affect your existing feed-in tariff.

Does a discounted battery automatically save money?

No. A government discount lowers the purchase price, but it does not guarantee that a battery will be financially suitable for every home.

The result depends on things such as:

  • How much solar energy your home produces

  • How much electricity you use

  • When you use electricity

  • Your electricity tariff

  • The size and price of the battery

  • Battery efficiency and degradation

  • Warranty conditions

  • Whether you join a virtual power plant

  • How electricity prices change in the future

A larger battery is not automatically a better battery. It needs to be properly sized for your solar production, household use and goals.

Ask the installer to explain the estimated savings and payback period, including the assumptions used to calculate them.

Can rental properties receive support?

The federal battery program may apply to eligible residential premises, but the property owner will generally need to approve and purchase the installation.

Queensland also has a separate Supercharged Solar for Renters program for eligible landlords. That scheme is for solar panel installations rather than a general home battery rebate, and it has its own application and eligibility rules.

Landlords and tenants should check the current government requirements before entering a contract.

How Battery Match QLD works

Battery Match QLD makes it easier to take the first step.

  1. Tell us about your property and what you are considering.

  2. We review your location and basic energy requirements.

  3. Where coverage is available, we connect you with a suitable local installer.

  4. The installer discusses the property, confirms potential eligibility and prepares a quote.

  5. You decide whether the system and price are right for you.

Where possible, your enquiry is sent to one suitable installer at a time instead of being sold to a long list of companies.

There is no obligation to accept a quote.

If you are considering a battery, adding storage to an existing solar system or installing a complete solar-and-battery package, Battery Match QLD can help you find a suitable installer.

Tell us as much or as little as you currently know. A recent electricity bill can help the installer understand your energy use, but uploading one is optional.
