Will a Home Battery Keep My Power On During a Blackout?
Some home batteries can provide backup power during an outage. Some cannot. If keeping the lights, fridge or other essentials running matters to you, raise it before an installer designs the system.
A battery sold for everyday solar storage does not automatically mean your whole house will keep working when the grid goes down.
Essential circuits or the whole home?
An installer may propose backup for selected circuits, such as lighting, a fridge and certain power points. A whole-home backup setup is a different request.
Be specific about what you want to run. An air conditioner, hot water system or other large appliance can change the equipment and design required. Ask the installer to show exactly what the proposed backup setup will support.
Questions to put in writing
Before accepting a quote, ask:
Does this system provide power during a grid outage?
Which rooms, circuits or appliances will have backup?
What can run at the same time?
Can the solar panels recharge the battery while the grid is down?
Are backup hardware and electrical work included in the quoted price?
What happens when the battery runs low?
The answers depend on the battery, inverter, wiring and installation design. Get them written into the quote so you know what you’re buying.
Start with your real reason for buying
If blackout protection is your main reason, say so. If your main goal is using stored solar power after sunset, say that too. The right conversation starts with how your household uses electricity and what you need the system to achieve.
Battery Match QLD helps Queensland homeowners take that first step. Tell us about your home, existing solar system and backup needs. Where we have a suitable partner, we can introduce you to an installer who can assess the property and prepare a formal quote.
Battery Match QLD provides general information and installer introductions. A licensed installer must confirm the technical design, installation requirements and backup capability for your home.
