Can You Get a Home Battery Without Solar Panels in Queensland?
Yes, a home battery can be installed without rooftop solar if the equipment and property are suitable. It would charge from the electricity grid rather than your own solar panels. But there is a major difference in the current rebate rules: a battery installed without solar PV is not eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount.
If you do not have solar yet, it is worth comparing a grid-charged battery with a new solar and battery system before spending the money.
What does a battery do without solar?
A grid-charged battery can store electricity bought at one time and supply it to your home later. Whether that saves money depends on your electricity plan, the difference between cheap and expensive periods, the energy lost during charging and discharging, and the installed cost. Some battery systems can provide blackout backup if that feature is included in the design. A battery by itself does not guarantee backup.
Ask an installer for a calculation based on your actual tariff. A large gap between off-peak and peak prices may help, but it is not a promise that the battery will pay for itself.
What if I install solar and a battery together?
The federal program supports eligible batteries connected to a new or existing solar PV system. If you have neither, a combined installation may qualify when the battery, solar, installer and other scheme requirements are met. The solar installation may have its own certificate benefit as well. Ask for both discounts to be shown separately on the written quote.
The right solar size still depends on your roof, daytime electricity use and future plans. Adding panels solely to unlock a battery discount may be a poor decision if the overall system is unsuitable for the home.
